The problem
“How do we convert more of our highest quality leads?”
You're expected to know why customers buy. But when did anyone give you the time to ask?
If you lead marketing at a growing SaaS company, you've probably been asked at least one of these lately.
- Who exactly should we be going after?
- What actually made our best customers buy from us?
- What did their buying process really look like, and how do we optimise it?
- Why don't we have more case studies and real customer proof?
- What words should we be using in our marketing to win more of the customers we actually want?
Every one of those questions has the same answer, and it isn't in your dashboards. It's in the heads of your best customers: why they chose you, what nearly stopped them, and the exact words that tipped them over.
Surveys, NPS scores and onboarding forms were never designed to get that out. So you're left guessing, and guessing feels fine right up until a quarter goes wrong.
The cost of guessing
Your buyers trust your customers far more than they trust you.

You already have happy customers getting real results. The trouble is their stories are stuck in Slack threads, sales calls and your team's heads, instead of on your homepage, in your ads and in front of your next buyer.

About
Hi, I'm Emma.
Head of Partnerships and Head of Customer Success at SmarterQueue since 2018. Part of WeWork's London launch team in 2015. A decade of interviewing people, from hiring to customer stories, and a long-standing study of psychology.
What ties it all together is people. I've lived and worked across Europe, the Americas and Latin America, and wherever I go, people open up to me. That's the whole secret behind a great customer interview: the customer forgets it's research and simply tells you the truth.
Questions
The things people usually ask.
Why not just use AI to analyse our reviews and calls, or run the interviews?
I use AI too, for transcripts and spotting patterns, so I can spend my time on what it can't do. AI can only analyse what's already been said, and your reviews and sales calls only capture what customers chose to say in public or in front of a salesperson. People don't open up to a bot. They open up to a person who's genuinely interested in them and makes them feel safe enough to say what they really think. So AI does the busywork, and I do the conversation.
We already talk to our customers.
Brilliant, that puts you ahead of most. But customers speak differently to the company they pay. With your team they're polite; with an outsider they're honest. They'll tell me what nearly put them off, who else they looked at, and what they actually tell colleagues about you.
We already have case studies and G2 reviews.
Great, keep them. Reviews tell buyers you're good. Interviews tell you why, in words you can put straight into your ads, homepage and sales emails.
Our customers are too busy.
I write the invitation for you to send and handle all the scheduling and chasing, at a time that suits them. Being asked about their success is flattering, and they can be featured too.
Will this embarrass us or annoy our customers?
Your customers are your most precious asset, so I treat them that way. You approve the invitation and the questions before anyone is contacted. Every interview is private, and nothing is published without your approval and your customer's.
What if customers say negative things?
That's some of the most valuable material you'll ever get, and it stays private. You'll hear it from me, privately, with what to do about it.
You haven't done this for a client before, have you?
I've done exactly this in-house at SmarterQueue, interviewing customers whose stories became case studies, testimonials and content right across the buyer journey. That's why I'm taking just three founding clients at a founding price, in return for a case study. And you only pay the second half after you've heard the first interview.
How is this different from a positioning consultancy or a content agency?
Content agencies make content. Positioning consultancies work from what your team already knows, and some don't interview customers at all. I do both: the research that tells you why people really buy, and the proof that convinces the next buyer.
When will we see results?
You'll have your first insights and assets within the first month. How fast they turn into more customers depends on how you use them, which is why the first month includes a map of exactly where each one goes.
Can I cancel?
One Month has no ongoing commitment. Three Months is a three-month commitment at a lower monthly price, then month to month.
Will you sign an NDA, and how is customer data handled?
Yes, happily. Recordings and transcripts are stored privately and shared only with you. Every customer agrees to the recording before we start, and raw files are deleted 90 days after the project ends unless you'd like them kept.
Do customers get anything for their time?
Most customers love the chance to be in the spotlight. If they'd like to, we feature them and their company in the episode and clips, which gives them free exposure to your audience. If a customer would rather stay private, you're welcome to offer a thank-you such as a gift card, at your own cost.
